According to a new report by Juniper research, carrier billing is set to generate $14B in operator revenues over next 5 years.

  • Operators and over-the-top (OTT) content companies including Amazon, Netflix and Hulu stand to gain from an extension of carrier billing options from traditional mobile phones to devices including tablet PCs, games consoles and smart TVs.
  • The research notes that carrier billing has enabled the first-time monetization of unbanked and younger consumers in app stores. When banked users are included, the company said carrier billing can provide 30-times the paid conversion rate of credit card-based app store payments in some instances.

Probably vindicates my decision not to give my kids the iTunes login and password otherwise they would be contributing to that 30x increase!!  On a serious note, carrier billing is still a valuable card that operators have up their sleeve.  Love ‘em or hate ’em it seems most of us trust them with our credit card details. So if the carrier are the big winners here, who are the losers?
